carbonation. Quite tart. Can't get past the blueberry to find the wheat. Crazy Girl Golden - Golden yellow blonde. A little bit of Cascades hops. Scarlet Knight Red Ale - Low hops. Strong, lasting finish. Shoot The Moon IPA - Hop lovers special. Tones of Cascades and Chinook. Flag Me Down Brown - Rich copper. Medium to light body. Very effervescent. Mild bitter. Spring Jimmy's Dark - Roasty, roasty dark. Too thin for porter, too heavy for a brown, too bland for a scottich. Sully Oatmeal Stout - Typical but stale, acrid, and oxidized. |

Triumph Brewing Co.
1997 |
Big cavern of a noisy, well apportioned, yuppie restaurant. Grey, red, brick, and wood. Food has stuff like "served with dissaladere potatoes" and "served over tomato cous cous, yogurt cheese & black olive oil". | Pale Ale - Cask conditioned on a tight
sparkler. Not remarkable, infact quite mild. Some British bitterness.
Acceptable mainly because served at the proper temperature. Honey Wheat Amber Pilsner Irish Dry Stout Bengal Gold IPA Hefeweizen. |
| Red Bank | Basil T's
1997 Now called The Original Basil T's |
Italian restaurant that's been there for decades. Upscaled with added 7bbl brewery. College staff. | Ms. Lucy's Wheat - Clear, crisp blonde ale.
Heavy hops for style. Rosie's Pale Ale - Medium hopped with Cascade. Innoffensive. Rocket Red - Nice and malty with lots of hops. Dark red. Stale aftertaste. Big Vic's Porter - Totally opaque. Dry hopped with Goldings. Maxwell's Dry Stout - Certainly dry, almost chalky. Cheek contracting acidity. Cascades hops. Seasonal IPA - They use a long cold rest in the fermenter and they dry hop hard. Very light color. Cascade hops not overdone. |
| Woodbridge | JT Bitting Brewing Co.

Minimal structural changes to bering an old coal company
building to a typical brick industrial pub. Right downtown. Opened 3
months before our visit.
Iced glasses but beer served reasonably warm. |
JJ's Rasp Wheat Ale - Sweet with only a hint of
berry. Almost a bland alcopop. Victoria's Golden Ale - Golden straw color. Under hopped and under malted. Deeper color than taste. Bittings Best Bitter - Deep copper from caramel malts. NW hops but underhopped. Malty. Still drinkable. More of a mild. O'Holloran's Irish Red - Dark red copper. Good use of British hops. "Based on a 100 year old recipe from the Belhaven Brewery". Good bite. Lingering aftertaste. Knockout Bock - Smooth maibock with no bite. Blackjack Oatmeal Stout - Creamy black. A little bitter chocolate. |

1996 |
Picnic tables and starkly modern. Opened just weeks before
we visited. Attached homebrew shop is 2 years old and the brewpub portion
is an offshoot of that. Brewer plans to experiment a lot.
This seems to be a rough start for them, 1 bad, 1 bland, and 1 stout. The unwashed masses will not find an instant home. |
Wheat - Unfiltered cloudy lemon yellow. Very
pale taste. Salty. Not disagreable but light for style. Pale Ale - Grapefruit, grapefruit, grapefruit. Brewer says he won't repeat that one. Not an unpleasant belch though. Stout - Cross of sweet and imperial. Toasty but not burnt. |

Small inside with a large patio garden. Bar is very small on the edge of the kitchen. Patio is a put-up-your-feet-and- watch-the-world-go-by type of place perfectly matching the town. | Peach Naked Ale - Light yellow. Medium peach. Ol 43 Blonde - Full copper. Honey tinge to the taste and the aftertaste. Eske's Special Bitter - Dark Copper. Smooth and bitter. Mesa Pale Ale - Light copper and slightly cloudy. Balanced. Honey? Seco Stout - Opaque brown. 1998 |
Raucous downtown activity pub on 3 floors. If we
needed to find a typical formula brewpub this would be it - and
that's not derogatory in any way.
All beers served quite cold. |
Al Capone Amber - Pale yellow and light on the
malt. Almost undrinkable amount of Cascade hops. Ma Barker Light - Blueish yellow. Light blonde. Jesse James Pale - Light gold. Fruity. Raspberry Wheat - Bright, plenty of raspberry. No wheat character. Butch Cassidy Porter - Mahogany. Way too cold. Creamy. Good lacing. Nondescript, just dark. It occupies space. Sundance Stout - Nitro dispense. Irish dry stout but not very dry nor very Irish. |
| Corning | Market Street Brewing Company
1997 |
Open 3 weeks when we visited (the first time).
Small, narrow place with a 100 year old bar back. Historic downtown section in an old house made into a business site at least 50 years ago. Quiet outdoor patio. |
Hefeweizen - Medium cloudy. Dark lemon. Little
carbonation. German yeast character comes through. Balanced and not too
strong. Pale Ale - Creamy head. Dark copper. Gobs of NW hops. An IPA but too dark. Old English Ale - Strong chocolate porter. Sweet with a touch of roasty. Nut Brown Ale - Browner and Darker. In range. Very similar to Old English Ale but without roasty overtones. D'Artagnan Dark - Crystal, victory, chocolate, roasted, and black malts plus brown
sugar. A heavy brown or tasty porter. Brown to black and quite opaque. Malty with all the grains come through but not sweet. |

| Hyde Park | Hyde Park Brewing
1998 |
Directly across from FDR's home and library.
60's restaurant with areas carved out for the brewery including a
mezzanine directly over the bar.
All beers served with lots of carbonation. The sweet potato french fries have more character than any of the beers. |
Big Easy Blonde Ale - Light gold. Well
balanced. Hefeweizen - Not very hefe. Good German clove and banana notes. Rough Rider Red Ale - Light mahogany. Mild and malty. Mary P's Porter - "six different malts". Deep red brown. Light taste. They say "rich chocolate character" but they lie. Special Old Bitter - Fuggles and Goldings hops. Adequate hops but a blah beer. Total Chaos Stout - Light body and decently roasty. |
