Music hall that's intentionally dingy. Directly across the street from better known Bell's Eccentric Cafe.

A music, poetry, and occasional film venue with 12 taps, it's loved by those who feel the Eccentric Cafe isn't eccentric enough. There's no food to speak of, the atmosphere is basic, the clientele is mainly college, yet it draws folks for the beer.

2000
2004

A bar bar in small town midwest, but the small of malt when walking in makes it special. Friendly local. Copper topped bar. Cribbage and trivial pursuit at the bar.

It's mainly "just a bar". The main entertainments are weekend music and a very extensive game and book shelf. When Michiganders hunker down for the winter, it's places like this they drive their snowmobiles to. This one brews its own beer.

Billy Goat Bock - Sharp. Cloudy orange. Touch sweet.
Depot Pilsner - Bright yellow with low carbonation. Malt and hops are strong and balanced. Very good beer.
Old Hat Hefe - Milky cloudy. Lemon and clove is strong. Good meal finisher.

Marshall Dark Horse Brewing Hideaway brewpub is behind the Wacky Willies liquor store in south Marshall. Right by the railroad tracks on M227. Compact brewhouse in back with a reliable bottling machine named Laverne. There's 600 members of their mug club (in a town of 7,000 people). The bar seats maybe 50 and holds about 80 but the band shell out back is rocking in the summer. The interior is decorated in, well, stuff. Stuff hanging on the w all. Stuff hanging from the ceiling. Even the tap handles are made up of stuff. Belgian Amber - American amber brewed with Belgian yeast. There's a small amount of candy sugar in the mash and it comes through. Balanced hops.

Picnic tables and starkly modern. Opened just weeks before we visited. Attached homebrew shop is 2 years old and the brewpub portion is an offshoot of that. Brewer plans to experiment a lot.

Brisco Bridge Blackberry Lager - Blackberrys added to a small batch of their Mad Bug Lager. Sweet on a simple, crisp base.
Pot Belly Pale - wrought iron red. Light color from a little chocolate malt.
