B.I.G. News

Festival numbers: The B.I.G. estimates 4,000 people attended, up from 3,175 last year. No arrests, no accidents. "We're quite insufferably pleased with ourselves". And grateful for the cloud cover. The only problems stemmed from having too many people. Look for 2009's Fest to be in the same park but with a limit way less than 4,000.

Attention: Two cameras were lost at the Festival. One lost Sony and one found Kodak. If you found a Sony or lost Kodak, please contact Bob 317-856-6092.

Firkins at the Festival:
- Barley Island Bourbon Stout, IPA
- Bells Porter, Two Hearted
- Broad Ripple Replicale
- Clipper City Hang Ten Weizen Dopplebock
- Cumberland Scotfree
- Founders Double Dry Hopped Pale
- Lafayette Double Dry Hopped Eighty Five
- New Albanian Phoenix Kentucky Kommon
- Ram Replicale
- Rock Bottom Indy Raccoon Red w/ Simcoe dry-hopping
- Rock Bottom Orland Park American Dream IPA, Replicale
- Schlafly APA w/ Willamette dry-hopping

Here are couple more pictures to go along with the IndianaBeer Webmaster's album.

That last picture is an important one. The Replicale brewers will be keeping some of their Scottish Ale in a Jack Daniels barrel until the Brewers of Indiana Guild's Winter Beer Festival. Sorry, no date set yet. Stay tuned.

Indiana Brewery News

"Well the rumors are true. Mad Anthony and Elkhart native Eric Brewer have entered into a license agreement to bring Mad Anthony's to Elkhart. Construction has begun and if all goes well the restaurant could open in early November. Brewer purchased the Old Faith Mission bldg in downtown Elkhart. The project also includes up to three upper level apartments. We are very excited to work with Eric and to help broaden the Mad Anthony Brand. The restaurant will serve the same menu and plans to have eight brews on tap."

Upland's Lambics come out pretty well at RateBeer. Not just the best made in America, the Strawberry is rated #5 in the world. Just behind Cantillion Lou Pepe Pure Kriek. The Raspberry is 2 places behind and one place higher than the Lou Pepe Framboise. That's some good company there Caleb.

It's time once again for musical chairs in downtown Indy. 1) Clay Robinson left the Ram to go all Northern Exposure (until the snow starts). 2) John Simmons went from Rock Bottom to the Ram. 3) Adrian Ball, late assistant brewer at Alcatraz and chef at Brugge is now at Rock Bottom as assistant under Jerry Sutherlin.

New Albanian's Bank Street Brewhouse construction has started. Pictures here. We've heard a rumor about a bottling line at the new place. Then rumors about a canning line. Roger Baylor says "Yep, Foster-sized oilcans".

And if you don't know RichO's/NABC, let the Hoosier Beer Geeks tell you about it in their blog about a trip to Louisville.

Upland Preservation Pilsner's Indianapolis release gets ink in the Indianapolis Star. article

Warbird gets ink in the, wait for it, Washington Post. article Oh, you have to read down to the very last sentence. A humble Dave Holmes adds:

Friends of Warbird Brewing Company:

When I started making beer in my kitchen, I did not imagine that one day I would have a beer company mentioned among the best in the country by a major publication such as the Washington Post.

This article was written by Maureen Ogle, author of Ambitious Brew: The Story of American Beer. It was published in the Sunday Washington Post as the news was breaking that InBev was attempting to buy Anheuser-Busch. Today, that deal is done. It has been announced that the King of Beers is now the Prince, and the new King resides in Belgium. The company will be known as InBev-Anheuser-Busch and they will be the largest brewing company in the world. As the very smallest and youngest of the esteemed group mentioned in the last paragraph, we will continue to compete with the biggest in the healthy and vibrant spirit of all who have come before us as American brewers.

Cheers

Turoni's gets ink in the Courier Press. "Imagine this. It's the first half of the Super Bowl, and one of those new commercials brings to your TV screen three frogs sitting on lily pads. They belch out in order, "Tu"... "Ro" ... "Ni's."" article

Mat Gerdenich of Cavalier tells us "The Stone 12th Anniversary ale Arrived to our Indiana warehouse today and will begin making its way to bars, restaurants and liquor stores that sell better beer! Indiana has received a larger quantity than we have in the past from the Stone Brewery for the outstanding special release beers. So the 12th Anniv. should be more plentiful; but make no mistake it is still limited and should be purchased while it is available as it will not be around for long." What he didn't say is "12" is a Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.

"Inspired by your visit and the recent Indiana Beer Week, we have added a twenty face cooler for Indiana beer only. Just wanted to keep you updated with our progress.

Indiana Beer Reviews

  • Broad Ripple - Cask Conditioned Amarillo Lager - Bright copper color. For sure lots of citric, spicy Amarillo hops. An IPL?
  • Broad Ripple Brewpub ReplicAle on the handpull. Dark copper. Appropriately lightly carbonated and warmer temperature as a cask conditioned ale deserves. Kevin put all the hops in at the beginning of the boil for bitterness and there is no bitter aroma at all. Taste is malty yet well balanced by hops. A true Scottish exhibition of a British ESB. Cask conditioned is the only way to go. Oh, it will be in a firkin at the Festival on Saturday.
  • Brugge Brasserie Diamond Kings of Heaven 08. Ted's second creation of stuff sitting in a barrel back in the corner.  "Brettanomyces - The wild yeast strain responsible for Lambic fermentation. Sometimes added to other beer styles to produce a horsey or leathery character." Yes, yes, yes. Massive, massive brett aroma in this surprisingly bright brown beer. It took me minutes to get my nose out of the glass and dare get to that wetting of lips stage. The taste is actually more subdued, still quite tart. Has unspecified figgish, bready, sour Old Ale tastes chasing each other around. I'm told it was brewed with some persimmons.
  • Oaken Barrel's new Berliner Weisse is a summertime treat. Acid malt, lactobacillus, and some lactic acid added to intensify the complex sourness that comes out after 3 months aging. Not overbearing. Very lip and tongue drying. 3.9%.
  • Ram - Mohawk Imperial Red - Pale cordovan. Summit and Glacier bittering hops with more Summit in the aroma and then dry-hopped with Cascades. Smoother than most Double Reds. Big on balance also with more Summitness coming through as it warms. Quite like a Killians at 110 decibels - and that's a good thing.
  • Rock Bottom, Downtown Indy - Bottoms Up Kölsch - Brilliant mellow yellow color. Neutral nose. Deep malt quickly overtaken by abundant drying short crisp bitterness. An excellent example.
  • Rock Bottom, 86th St - Bottoms Up Kölsch - Bright yellow with minimal aroma. Taste is rich and full, accentuating the more delicate body. Adequate properly earthy bittering invites another sip. Can it win Best of Show twice?
  • Rock Bottom, 86th St - Chili Chocolate Cinnamon Brown (on the handpull) - Black. Big cinnamon nose and flavor added to the Brickway Brown. I had one with lunch of a Thai Chicken wrap. The soy from the wrap hides the cinnamon and accents the chocolate. The Yam Hash side dish inures you to the cinnamon and turns the CCCB into a dry porter sensation. We hope Liz doesn't lose this recipe and brings it back around Thanksgiving.
  • Replicale - Alcatraz - Maltier than average. Thicker and creamier also. Every so slight smokiness.
  • Replicale - Broad Ripple Brewpub - One of the two bitter brothers. Kevin put all his hops in at the start of the boil to enhance the dry finish. It's also on the handpull in cask-conditioned form at the Brewpub.
  • Replicale - Oaken Barrel - Longest finish, a probably the bitterest. Let it warm a bit to bring out more complexity.
  • Replicale - Ram - The clean one that probably comes closest to style. Highest carbonation. Dry finish without the bigger bitterness of BRBP & OB. A Scottish ESB.
  • Replicale - Rock Bottom, Downtown - Thickish body. Just a touch of diacetyl when warmed (to BJCP style, btw).

News compiled by Bob Ostrander, Marketing Director/Webmaster. It's all considered accurate but then Bob has been known to have a drink or two while writing this so-called tome. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the Brewers of Indiana Guild, in which case Bob will lose his job. Some coupon offers are for Associate Members only, non-transferable, and may be withdrawn due to unforeseen circumstances, acts of the gods, bankruptcy, or other capricious reasons. It's illegal in Indiana to offer any alcoholic beverage at discount through coupons, prizes, or the fact that the drinker is female. Sorry. Any resemblance of to any beer, living or dead, is purely a coincidence.
