News and Gossip

Sam Strupeck's new brewery, Shoreline in Michigan City, is off to a flying start - medalwise. His Beltaine Scottish Ale just won a Silver medal at the World Beer Cup. Congratulations.

Doug Memering and Jon Myers of It's All the Buzz have bought the Columbus Bar in downtown Columbus, Indiana. They "plan to set up a brewing system at the bar and sell a variety of styles and flavors of beer." article

We're told Kwan Casey has bought the sole ownership of Oaken Barrel Brewing.

Warbird beer is available in San Angelo and Abilene Texas as of May 2, 2006. After all, it's a Texas Trainer T-6 on the can.

At Back Road, Chuck has tweaked the recipe for Millennium Lager with a new hop: Hershbrucker Hallertau, a finishing hop that will give it a bit more spicy hop flavor.

Anheuser-Busch has a new beer out called Wild Hop. A San Francisco Chronicle article describes it as "bitter, malty and watery" "marzipan, fruity, piney". 'Nuf said.

A Czech brewery, Chodovar, offers beer baths at their Beer Spa. In dark Bathing Beer no less. Weekend package for $150. Beer wraps about $22 additional.

In Norway two teenage boys, ages14 and 15, were paid $1,030.00 for 280 cans of out of date Carlsberg beer by a grocer that pays customers the retail price of any product they find on their shelves that is past its "best by" date.

Also in Norway, a woman living in an apartment above the Big Tower Bar turned on her kitchen tap and beer ran out. Someone downstairs had miswired the pipes.

Coors is adding some new fermentation tanks to their Shenandoah brewery. 40 of them. 90,000 gallons each. 7,000,000 barrels of beer a year.

Man banned from his local pub buys the place and unbans himself.

The "Beer of the Festival" at the Bradford Beer Festival was Brooklyn Smoked Porter brewery by Garrett Oliver of New York's Brooklyn Brewery who made it at Kelham Island Brewery in Sheffield.

Belfast's only brewery (a Bass plant) closed in 2004 but now Molly's Yard brewpub has returned brewing to the capital of Northern Ireland.

Budvar Czech Dark Lager has made it to England at last. It's also been spotted in Italy. No word when we'll see it on this side of the pond.

Headline: Miller beer to be first to use (Cold Can) Technology, er, next year. Not that we didn't hear about this technology 2 years ago.

RateBeer has a guide to the best beers available in Indiana according to their readers' voting.

"Larry Bird is delighted to present you with the premier release of Legends, a joint wine venture between Larry and Winemaster Mitch Cosentino." Now Larry Bird knows beer and never drinks beer that comes in a green bottle. But wine? Not even the Boston Globe can believe it.

Fosters news: 1) Scottish & Newcastle paid £309M for the Fosters trademark in Europe. 2) Foster's Twist will be made by Scottish & Newcastle. It's "brewed with citrus hops to give the lager its lime flavour". 3) Fosters won't sponsor Formula 1 races anymore - "part of a program to significantly reduce overheads within the Foster's Brewing International business."

The latest Anheuser-Busch vs. Budejovicky Budvar results: Cyprus. This time a settlement. One that seems to favor the Czech brewery.

The longest beer name may well be Comrade Bill Bartram's Egalitarian Anti-Imnperialist Imperial Soviet Stout, made by Bartram's Brewery of Bury St. Edmunds, England, but they don't make it any more. Sigh.

Michael Jackson's Rare Beer Club features only cork-bottled beers. You get 3 or 6 750ml bottles each month or every other month. Lots of options and they are needed when the top end Platinum Membership with 72 bottles a year goes for $1079 plus tax.

Founders Devil Dancer Triple IPA comes in at 13% ABV and either 112 or 200 IBU depending on who you ask. Yike. 200 IBU?

Coors Light Stay Cold Glassware is proven to keep beer colder, longer. Cold Wrap Bottles Combine Rocket Science with Rocky Mountain Cold.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the national brands used 27% more malt and 100% more hops back in 1950. IBUs have gone from 15 to 20 down to under 10.

Tennessee. Bah. They've proposed a rule that would require everyone buying beer in a liquor store to produce proof of ID. They also want to extort up to $285 per store as a "certification fee" so if they're caught selling to a minor they only get a $1000 fine instead of losing their license. If you pay up front, the penalty for breaking the law is less. Doesn't sound very democratic.

Cuba. Hmmm. Bucanero Brewing will launch a "premium" beer in May. Bucanero Max will be 6.5% ABV.

Press release passed on without comment: "Pro wrestler Triple H has signed to be part of Miller Lite's new beer campaign, joining Burt Reynolds, Eddie Griffen, Jerome Bettis and Aaron Rolston (the Colorado hiker who cut off part of his arm during a mountain climbing accident).
